Artwork Description:

Title: Autumn Moon 2

This painting was named for a Japanese acer tree.

After being pot-bound on my parents patio for many years, this sentimental little tree was recently relocated to my garden in Belper, where I enjoyed the stunning transformation from green to pinks, russets and a final vivid show of garnet & vermilion before he rested for winter.

I worked this painting in layers, to capture the foreground, the background and the jumble of branches between.
To push this work even further,  I harnessed my tendency for self-sabotage, by printing over portions of the painting, obscuring some of the obsessive fiddly bits, and then stitching back into it to “mend” it.

Someone commented that it reminded them of the Japanese art of kintsugi, of acceptance & healing, which I though was entirely apt.

Acrylics, graphite, oil pastel and embroidery.

Artist Bio:
this work is a natural progression from textile design back into drawing & painting.

within the beautiful location of amber valley, i'm enjoying working on a new garden that i'm gradually filling with floral inspiration; novice gardener with firm plant favourites in terms of structure, texture & colour combination.

exploring & experimenting with fresh creative processes, as well as the familiar layering and tactile qualities of embroidered work, have led to these colourful, expressive, textural pieces based in nature.
