Title: Splash Orpington hen with mouse

Meet Splash, a striking Splash Orpington hen with a commanding yet gentle presence. She diligently oversees the pen, ensuring harmony among its inhabitants. Her velvety-soft feathers and affectionate nature make her a comforting presence—you can’t help but feel that everything is in good hands. Ever watchful, she keeps a keen eye on the visiting wildlife, from hedgehogs to small mice.

This piece was created using a standard watercolour pan set, complemented by watercolour pencils and a line wash ink effect on gummed paper. I particularly enjoyed rendering the brickwork of the wall, which adds texture and depth to the composition. The inclusion of the field mouse enhances the narrative, reinforcing the connection between Splash and the surrounding wildlife.

Artist Bio:
Thank you for visiting my page.

I've been inspired by Renoir, Van Gogh, Dali’s “Persistence of Memory,” and Hopper’s “Morning Sun.” Planning my paintings can take weeks or months. I research various perspectives and details, studying other artists’ works. After choosing a canvas size, I use software to align my sketch, then sketch key details. Applying the right ground paint is crucial to building up the composition, with light and dark always in mind.

I don't always stick to the initial sketch as the painting process evolves, often adding or removing details to build depth. Photographing the artwork helps me review progress away from the studio. I seek feedback from family, friends, and other artists throughout the process.

Walking away from the final stages is challenging, but family support helps. I work with various mediums, though I often choose acrylic. My approach is guided by gut feeling, aiming to produce the best work possible.
