Artists Bio:
Melissa Speed is a pastel artist inspired by history, specialising in portraiture in her unique style. She applies colour using pastel sticks, then moves it using her fingers, knuckles, and fingernails to complete the drawing.
Melissa’s achievements include being longlisted and shortlisted for several art awards, including the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize, as well as being selected by judges to participate in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year Series 10.
Originally from Wolverhampton, she now lives in Derbyshire with her family. When she isn’t in her studio, she is usually volunteering at heritage sites or writing. Winner of a poetry for children competition, and proud to have had an historical poem adapted into a choral work by an American choir, Melissa combines her love of history with her creativity, which can be seen in much of her output.
