Pete Carthy : Nature Journalist

Artists Bio:

My creative practice is intertwined with my love of nature. Initially, this was through landscape photography, which began as a hobby for me when I was 14 years old, photographing the Lake District whilst taking part in a Fylde Coast walking club.

I did a BTEC OND in Photography, then moved to London on my own at 18 – to pursue a career in professional photography.

Over the last forty years, my creative practice has evolved into reduction linocut, botanical eco-print and nature journaling in watercolour – landscapes and botanical illustration.

I have completed a nature journal entry every day in and around the Scottish Borders since January 1, 2023, and have continued into 2024. On the 22nd of March, I shall be running my first art show in Edinburgh to celebrate my journaling. the 22nd of March 2025 will represent day 811, the title of the show.

In April 2024, BBC Scotland interviewed me about my daily nature journaling practice. In January 2024. an article was published both in print and online in the Peebleshire News and Border Telegraph – Regarding my year of nature journaling –  Border Telegraph article.  In May 2023, I was invited to write a blog post for the ’ International Nature Journaling Week‘ website.

I am inspired by people who have been inspired by nature to create art, photography and words that capture nature’s emotions.

From an early age, I sought out landscapes by Ansel Adams. Since then, Joe Cornish, Rob Talbot, Rowland Hilder, Turner, John Muir Laws, Thomas Bewick, Rev Gilbert White, Eric Ravilious, Angela Harding, Christopher Wormell, Rosebery Thief, Alex Boon, John Muir, India Flint, Jenny Dean and Clare Walker Leslie. These have all been hugely inspirational.

These artists and writers have shaped my vision, my feelings and my thoughts about what I am trying to capture when I look upon nature.

I am a self-taught artist.

I sell prints of my work and run workshops.

I would love to chat to you so get in touch.
