Title: Minding the Flock

Oil Painting Original Size – 61x46cm

Living in Carsington means that wherever you go there is animal life, especially sheep.  And at this time of the year there are so many tiny lambs.  I wanted to captures a quiet, melancholic rural landscape, characterised by soft, moody tones and a textured surface, using sand mixed with oils.  The people living in the lone cottage are “minding the flock”. The sky is filled with swirling clouds in shades of purples, greys, and hints of pink, creating a dusky, dreamlike ambiance.

The terrain is gently sloping and painted in rich purples and pinks, with a rough, almost impasto texture that gives the land a tactile quality.  Scattered across the field are several small white sheep with dark faces, providing a sense of scale and life to the otherwise still scene.

The use of space—most of the composition being open field—emphasizes the isolation and calm, while the brushwork and colour palette gives a chilly twilight impression.  It blends elements of impressionism and surrealism, focusing more on atmosphere and emotional resonance than on fine detail. The overall effect is hauntingly peaceful.

Artist Bio:
I live in the beautiful village of Carsington in Derbyshire.

My work focuses on creating atmospheric and textured landscapes, but I also create large abstract art pieces.

I am inspired by my surroundings and the fauna and flora of my local reservoir.

My abstract pieces are created with instinct and emotion, always focusing on the drama and intrigue a piece can portray.  Each piece is lovingly crafted, taking care to ensure the mood of a piece is captured through the use of harmonious and contrasting colours.
