Artwork Description:

Title: Pemberley (Chatsworth House)

Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire, is believed to have been one of the estates that inspired Jane Austin’s ‘Pemberley’,  the home of Mr Darcy in ‘Pride and Prejudice’, the arts and crafts illustrative style I have used for this series seemed a great fit for this period literature.

This series in oils is inspired by my love of the arts and crafts movement as well as the natural world. I am intrigued by how art and design can influence our perceptions and transport us to a different time. These works also mark a return to using oils which I haven’t used for several years, having mainly worked in magazine collage in the interim. They are in part experimental as I adapt my style to a different medium. I’m enjoying exploring the balance between realism and illustrative art.
