Artwork Description:

Title: Thornfield (North Lees Hall)

North Lees Hall, in Derbyshire, is believed to have been the property that inspired Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Thornfield’,  the home of Mr Rochester in ‘Jane Eyre’, the arts and crafts illustrative style I have used for this series seemed a great fit for this period literature.

This series in oils is inspired by my love of the arts and crafts movement as well as the natural world. I am intrigued by how art and design can influence our perceptions and transport us to a different time. These works also mark a return to using oils which I haven’t used for several years, having mainly worked in magazine collage in the interim. They are in part experimental as I adapt my style to a different medium. I’m enjoying exploring the balance between realism and illustrative art.
