Artists Bio:

Belper artist Ruth Gray has a background that deeply influenced her passion for art. Growing up in an environment steeped in artistic endeavours, with a family of photographers, craft enthusiasts, and artists, her formative years were marked by a keen attraction to art from as early as five.

Opting for a more personalized approach to art training, she chose not to overly formalize her art education, preferring to carve out her distinctive style. Although she refrains from describing herself as entirely self-taught, her art education is a culmination of guidance from her aunt, formal education at GCSE/A/level, and a two-year stint at art college during her time in Australia. Noteworthy among her mentors is the acclaimed watercolour tutor Charles Sluga, from whom she received valuable lessons for five years.

Her academic pursuits led her to attain a HND in Textiles Technology, a BA with 1st Class Honors in International Fashion Business, and, more recently, a Master of Art with Distinction in Public History and Heritage. Professing a love for learning, she admits to being a serial student, relishing the experiences of library research and the pursuit of knowledge.

Active in the art scene, she has exhibited solo and jointly since 2003, forming meaningful connections with fellow artists along the way. As a member of Peak District Artisans, she appreciates the opportunities it provides. Engaging in art demonstrations, workshops, and collaborations with community groups or schools, she strongly advocates for involving everyone in art as a soul-enriching endeavour. Ruth’s work is held in many private collections in both the UK and internationally.

Balancing her artistic pursuits with a professional life, as a Heritage Consultant for an architect and planning firm in Derby. Creating a symbiotic relationship between her work and her deep understanding of buildings and their significance in the local landscape.

Looking ahead, her aspirations include expanding her commissions, particularly enjoying creating house portraits for appreciative clients. Having produced pieces capturing wedding venues and garden portraits, she recognizes the importance of preserving shared spaces and memories through her art. Her journey reflects a harmonious blend of artistic passion, academic achievements, and a commitment to sharing the joy of art with others.
