Artists Bio:
Ruth Matthews balances her artistic pursuits with a professional life, as a Heritage Consultant working with listed buildings for an architect and planning firm in Derby. This creates a symbiotic relationship between her artwork and her deep understanding of buildings and their significance in the local landscape.
She grew up in an environment steeped in artistic endeavours, with a family of photographers, craft enthusiasts, and artists, her formative years were marked by a keen attraction to art from as early as five.
Her academic pursuits led her to attain a HND in Textiles Technology, a BA with 1st Class Honors in International Fashion Business, this led to a twelve-year career as a designer. More recently she completed a Master of Art with Distinction in Public History and Heritage resulting in a career change.
Opting for a more personalized approach to her art training, she chose not to overly formalize her art education, preferring to carve out her distinctive style. Although she refrains from describing herself as entirely self-taught, her art education is a culmination of guidance from her artist aunt, formal education at GCSE/A/level, and a two-year stint at Tafe New South Wales during her time in Australia. Noteworthy among her mentors is the acclaimed watercolour tutor Charles Sluga, from whom she received valuable lessons for five years.
Ruth has exhibited solo and jointly since 2003, forming meaningful connections with fellow artists along the way. For over a decade she has been an art demonstrator and workshop facilitator working with art societies, community groups and schools. Ruth strongly advocates for involving everyone in art as a soul-enriching endeavour.
Ruth’s work is held in many private collections in both the UK and internationally. Most notably her work is displayed within Hopton Hall collaborating with the owners to depict their cherished heritage properties. Her strong Derbyshire connection means her work can also be found in Derbyshire County Council Offices and Amber Valley Council Offices. Crossing the border Ruth also designed the Stapleford Parish Council Coat of Arms.
Ruth is a long-standing member of Peak District Artisans, and an affiliate member of The Institute of Historic Building Conservation she appreciates the opportunities both provide. Ruth is proud to represent a strong voice for the preservation of local heritage using her art as a conduit.
Looking ahead, her aspirations include expanding her commissions, particularly enjoying creating house portraits for appreciative clients. Having produced pieces capturing wedding venues and garden portraits, she recognizes the importance of preserving shared spaces and memories through her art. Her journey reflects a harmonious blend of artistic passion, academic achievements, and a commitment to sharing the joy of art with others.
