This colourful flower is called “Energy” – when I name my pieces I usually sit staring at it for sometime to see what jumps out at me and that was the word that hit me over and over again with this one. I think it sums up what is often in my head – ie lots of dynamic ideas – but I struggle to bring to fruition due to my annoying lack of energy!
Of course, it speaks to me on another level too – all my pieces reflect how I feel in my wild garden, inspired by the joy and life all around me.
This is reproduced from my original alcohol ink painting. I created many individual layers of inks, blowing and embellishing each stage to build the petals, resulting in this soft, yet dynamic & explosive effect.

My name’s Karen Johnson and I'm the Derby based artist behind Millie Moth. Inspired by my wild garden, my work falls into 2 styles - one uses alcohol inks to paint vibrant flowers, and the other is created digitally using elements of my paintings, drawings and isolated photographic images. My work is full of colour and I aim to convey the happiness I feel when I’m around flowers and foliage. There is such a wealth of life in every small growing space and I try to capture that beauty and vigour by injecting a little wildness and joy into every piece.
