Title: Rusty – Green

Mixed Media Painting – inks, pencils, paint

This series of 3 paintings were made after stumbling upon what I could only describe as a “Land Rover Graveyard” in Rousden, Devon.  I’m not into cars in any way but I couldn’t help but appreciate the beauty of these engines in their decay.

I have always had an affinity for the Japanese theory “Wabi Sabi”.  It refers to the way we perceive natural processes of maturation, aging, and decay. Rather than trying to preserve the initial appearance of an object, we should embrace its natural changes over time.  Scratches, cracks, or discoloured spots are not indicators of decreased value.  They demonstrate that the object has served a valuable purpose, being loved and used over and over again by its owner. Signs of wear and tear thus turn into precious attributes that bring out the unique character of the items.

Artist Bio:
I am a Derbyshire-based artist, creating mixed media paintings and making double-exposure photographs.  I also own a Cupcake business, "Blooming Cakes" with a retail unit in Belper. I create buttercream floral cakes, which some would consider as 'edible art'.
